Selecting a topic for this project was challenging. At my age there are many life experiences from which to choose, but my family kept encouraging me to tell this one since it profoundly influenced our family and I seldom talk about it. The birth of our first grand child five weeks ago also sparked the memories to resurface. The experience in Choices occurred 23 years ago. I believe the author Sue Monk Kidd expresses why I needed to create this digital story. “Stories have to be told or they die, and when they die, we can't remember who we are or why we're here.”
I used Camtasia to create the basic video and then attempted to refine it in iMovie. I hope my amateurish mistakes do not distract from the story. Finding a balance of images, music and narration to adhere to the multimedia principles we have learned, forced me to consider every aspect of this story in a different way. But most of all I focused on using the personalization principle and telling the story in a personal genuine way. According to Clark and Mayer (2011), using first person in multimedia presentations makes a listener feel they are included in a conversation causing deeper cognitive processing. Research proves listeners will feel more connected and work harder to make meaning from the information presented (p. 184).
After committing myself to this topic, I carefully scripted and edited the story to flesh out the important details. I recorded the narration using Camtasia and selected images from personal photo albums and located public domain images or Creative Commons licensed for reuse images. After placing these on the timeline, I began my search for music. I located a website with music for parents with children. This lead me to the chorus of the song selected. To gain some experience using iMovie, I imported it and added the finishing touches. Overall the time consuming experience
was satisfying.
